Tabletop gaming has entered the digital age in a big way! Players and GMs alike now come to the table armed with smart phones, tablets and laptops in an effort to speed up gameplay and reduce table clutter.

Publishers are making it easier for gamers as well. Many now offer PDF versions of their rulebooks and supplements (some even come free with purchase of the print version). It’s pretty much a no brainer at this point to carry a tablet to the table for quick rules access.

There are a ton of fantastic apps out there, but today I’m going to focus on 12 iPad RPG Tools that really showcase the power and benefits of bringing a tablet to the table. These apps have the chops to handle dice rolling, initiative tracking, virtual tabletops, campaign management, PDF viewing and more.

1. The Dicenomicon

The Dicenomicon

The Dicenomicon is the premier “virtual dice” app for iOS. But besides supporting more kinds of dice (even allowing you to make custom dice), it includes an extremely rich dice rolling formula language (“ELDARScript”) and other ways to add support for more game systems than any other product available.

But it is more than just dice - The Dicenomicon includes “Character sheets” for a wide range of popular games, keeping track of your various stats, automating common rolls and other book keeping task. Don’t find a game system you want? New character sheets can be defined using XML files.

2. 3D Virtual Tabletop

3D Virtual Tabletop

A gorgeous 3D virtual tabletop that looks like the real thing, and feels magical as you slide the map and minis around with your finger. 3D Virtual Tabletop defaults to a view with 3D pawns, or you can go top down for a more traditional virtual tabletop look. With pinch-to-zoom and touch navigation, moving around the map is simple and intuitive.

3D Virtual Tabletop comes with over 100 miniatures and a dozen maps, but best of all allows you to upload your own maps and minis. I connect my iPad to the TV using an HDMI cable so that the entire table can see the map in 46″ HD glory.
