In the At Last, the Secret to Affordable Dungeon Tiles Is Revealed blog post, we introduced you to the 2.5D Dungeon Tile method created by DM Scotty and the DM’s Craft. You’ll want to read that article first as it lays the foundation for today’s article.

Using the 2.5D Dungeon Tile technique, you can create cheap 3D-ish tiles that are not only good looking, but are also flat, light, portable and easy to store.

Let’s take a look at accessorizing your dungeon tiles with the addition of traps, doors, lava pits and even monsters!

Crafting Blade Traps

In this video, DM Scotty shows you how to create a simple blade trap you can use to carve up your PCs as they delve into your dungeon of despair.

Crafting a Spear Trap

Persistent physical traps (as opposed to traps like poison gas or flying arrows) lend themselves very well to crafting. In this video DM Scotty shows you how to use cocktail toothpicks to build a lethal spike trap.

Quick & Easy Dungeon Doors

There are lots of options for adding doors to your dungeons, including purchasing Hirst Arts (mold yourself) or Mage Knight doors from eBay. In this video DM Scotty teaches a quick & dirty method for making 3D doors for your 2.5D dungeon tiles.

Crafting a Portcullis Gate

You’ll typically find a portcullis gate at the front entrance of a castle. The gate slides up and down to open, and is typically spiked on the bottom. The DM’s Craft breaks down how to use sandwich sticks (fatter than normal toothpicks) to build your very own castle (or dungeon) gate.

Crafting Pillars for Your Dungeon Chambers

Every dungeon needs pillars. For one, they help hold up the roof in large rooms (most people forget to add these to their maps)…and they are a great feature for providing cover in tactical battles. This inexpensive method using cardstock will save you money, and create an awesome accessory for your dungeon.

Adding Lava to Your Dungeon Tiles

Whether it be for an ancient volcano or a dragon’s lair, adding lava to your dungeon tiles creates and exciting battlefield where your PCs must dodge hazards as well as arrows and sword thrusts.

Monsters - Purple Worm

Most of the time you’ll be using miniatures to represent the monsters your hero’s will encounter. But sometimes you’ll want a huge monster as a centerpiece of your dungeon tile. In this video the DM’s Craft shows how to create a giant purple worm that will strike fear in the heart of even the bravest warrior. You’ll be amazed at what DM Scotty can craft out of ordinary household junk!
